I've been photographing SpaceX's Starbase, Elon Musk's company town near Brownsville, Texas, since the summer of 2019. What was then a sparsely populated stretch of coastline has since transformed into a rapidly expanding hub of launch facilities, company housing and employee amenities — a so-called 'Gateway to Mars' that has drawn rocket enthusiasts, engineers, environmental activists and journalists like myself from around the world.
Prior to SpaceX's arrival in 2014, the area was best known for its beach, small residential community and location near the U.S.-Mexico border. Much remains unchanged — so long as you look east towards the Gulf of Mexico. Looking west tells a different story. Towering launch structures, giant production buildings and ongoing construction projects now dominate the skyline, creating a striking contrast between the natural landscape and one of the world's most ambitious aerospace projects.
我从2019年夏天就开始拍摄SpaceX的Starbase——埃隆·马斯克在德克萨斯州布朗斯维尔附近创建的公司小镇。那时这里还是人烟稀少的海岸线，如今已变身为快速扩张的发射设施集群、公司住房和员工配套，被誉为通往火星之门，吸引了来自世界各地的火箭爱好者、工程师、环保人士和像我一样的记者。
在SpaceX于2014年进驻之前，该地区最出名的是它的海滩、小型居民社区和毗邻美墨边境的位置。往东面向墨西哥湾的方向，大部分依然原样。但往西看就是另一番景象了——高耸的发射塔架、巨大的生产厂房和在建工程占据天际线，自然景观与世界上最雄心勃勃的航空航天项目之一形成了鲜明对比。
