Having money means knowing how to enjoy life, but it also means knowing how to seek out hardships. You need both.
When you have money, you should learn to enjoy it. It’s encouraged by the state and makes perfect sense, as it boosts consumption and economic growth. Occasionally staying at a luxury hotel, dining at a fine restaurant, or playing on your phone for a while... all of these are perfectly fine, normal, and not excessive.
However, if you do this every day, every month, and every year, it simply becomes decadence.
There’s an elementary school student who refuses to let his parents pick him up after school, choosing instead to run home. In the middle of summer, bare-chested and drenched in sweat, he’s literally seeking out hardship despite having the means not to.
The kid is far from foolish or clueless; on the contrary, he is incredibly smart. By doing this, he has cultivated a strong work ethic, a willingness to endure hardships, and a relentless drive to succeed.
My little grandson, on the other hand, is driven home quickly by me after school. The moment he walks through the door, he dives into the extra coursework I’ve prepared for him in three core subjects.
While most kids run around and play after school, enjoying life, he chooses to seek out hardship. Yet, he has not only become a top student but an absolute academic genius.
2. 找罪受:直译的话老外可能会觉得“Why would he do that?!”,所以我用了 seek out hardships 或者 seek out hardship despite having the means not to(明明有条件不吃苦,却偏要吃苦),把这种“主动锻炼”的语境点透。
